The Science of Procrastination - And How To Manage It

Let's face it you're likely reading this article in an effort to avoid some other tasks you're procrastinating to learn how to stop procrastinating but the clock is ticking so why can't you seem to stop though the psychological causes are still debated there's a human tendency to over or underestimate the value of a reward based on its temporal proximity. This is often referred to as temporal discounting for example if I offered you $100 today or 110 in a month most would take the hundred and run. But what if instead I offered you 100 dollars in a year or 110 in a year and one month suddenly you might say to yourself if I can wait a year I can wait the extra month but the time and value difference are the exact same in each example it turns out that human motivation is highly influenced by how imminent the reward is perceived to be meaning, the further away the reward is the more you discount its value. This is often referred to as present bias or hyperbolic dis...

Cognitive Distortions

When I was in school, I hated giving presentations they were just the worst type of assignment in my opinion. I stumble over my words forget what I wanted to say and they just always felt like they went really poorly but then I'd get pretty good grades and I didn't ever understand how that was happening how would I feel like I did so poorly but then I'd get good grades well. Eventually I learned this is caused by something called cognitive distortions.   A cognitive distortion is a type of “irrational thought” where you see things as a bit more negative than they really are now. Cognitive distortions are completely normal everyone has them it's just part of being human but when they're too frequent or too intense they can contribute to problems like depression and anxiety. Today I want to tell you about five different types of cognitive distortions the first cognitive distortion is called emotional reasoning this is when you feel something so intensely that y...

Cognitive Behavior Therapy

CBT is a type of psychotherapy that deals with our thoughts--that's the "cognitive" part of the name--and our behaviors, which is of course the "behavioral" part of the name. CBT has been thoroughly researched and found to be an effective treatment for all sorts of disorders. Some of these are depression, anxiety, trauma, phobias, addictions, eating disorders . In some cases, the treatment can be effective in as few as 8 sessions , and the effects are long lasting.   CBT is based on the idea that our thoughts affect our feelings and our behaviors. Something happens to us, we use thought to interpret the event, which by the way, can happen so fast that we don't always notice this happening. Then finally, we react to our thoughts with emotions and behaviors. Here's a quick example. You call your friend and they don't answer. Now, two different people could have two different thoughts about the same situation. Person A might think: "My ...
